Tricking is often defined by its free-form nature. Many trickers create unique aesthetics. That’s “style”. At the same time, with roots in gymnastics and martial arts, there are or can be straight-forward progressions to many tricks. The Sport of Tricking is similar to tumbling. Complex techniques can be broken down into incremental progressions, then built up into amazing acrobatics. The Art of Tricking is similar to dance choreography. Trickers refine stylized tricks and put together aesthetic and original combinations to produce a unique performance.
The Sport is analogous to ______ while the Art is analogous to______ :
- Tumbling; Dance choreography
- Carpentry; Architectural design
- Refining musical techniques; Musical composure
- Grammatical and Vocabulary mastery; Writing a story
The Sport and the Art are not mutually exclusive. In the same way that a musician can be both a technician and a composer, a tricker can have power and technical mastery as well as creativity and style.
In tricking, both the technician and the composer perform. You must be a decent technician in order for your compositions to come to life. You need not be a composer in order to be a technician. Therefore, it is imperative that all trickers put work into their Sport, but composers can work on their Art at any time they choose.
